Lock Haven with Brienne.

"Lock Haven"
9"x12" Watercolor on 140# cold pressed paper block
SOLD ---
Thanks to the Lewisburg Artists Guild and Indoor Art Show
at Packwood House, where the painting just sold.

I painted this scene last fall in the Pennsylvania college town of
Lock Haven.  I was there to meet and paint with Brienne Brown.
She is an amazing watercolor painter.  That is an understatement.

Here is a picture of the two of us.  It was a chilly and rainy day.
We had to huddle under the awning of a beauty salon.

Our finished artwork. And off to lunch.
What a great time we had.

Farm Near Reiff's Greenhouse

"Five Silos Farm"

5"x7" watercolor on 140# cold pressed paper
Arches Bright White

This farm is just off the Rail Trail between Lewisburg and Mifflinburg PA.
Lots of Mennonite buggies and bicycles passed by while I created this little painting.
It is Sunday and they were heading home from church
A curious couple stopped to see what I was doing.
The husband said the silo on the far left is a recent addition to the farm.

This is my submission for the week long competition.   There was some heavy rain on Wednesday. (Not good for watercolors). I painted the riverboat Thursday morning.  There were some big puddles left that I wanted to take advantage of.  This is on City Island, Harrisburg, PA.
Later this morning I will be competing in the Quick Draw event.  I'm still trying to decide what to paint for that!

Selfie for the Road, watercolor by Jane Albin

"Selfie for the Road"
12"x15" Watercolor on 140# Arches Bright White

I won First Place for the Quick Draw event last May with this watercolor in Camp Hill PA.  Part of the prize package was an ad in Plein Air Magazine.  I suddenly realized that I was going to actually publish my new web site since it is listed in the ad.  OH NO!!!

Well I have the web site up and running as of two days ago.  It still needs some tweaking and a lot more work but I guess it is an acceptable beginning.   If you want to check it out, the web address is www.janealbin.com.

About the picture.
I wanted to do something with reflections and the Airstreams were calling me. They were behind a wonderful eatery, the Cornerstone Cafe, on the main street of Camp Hill.  I staked out my location to paint two hours before the quickdraw start, and went in and had breakfast some fellow artists.  Then we all left to paint.  Halfway through the piece I was sweating, frustrated, and wondering what I had been thinking trying to paint these ridiculous things that I could not finish in time…  aaaggghhhh!!!!
Not to mention the clouds rolling by changing the shadows every few seconds.

So here are the pictures from that day.  I was truly surprised when I won. (I thought the judge only liked oil paintings.)    Next time please remind me to "take off that ridiculous hat"!

Plein Air at Robert Hughes' Farm

"Turning at Robert's House"
7"x9" Oil on canvas plein air

The oil painting class at the Sunbury Y Art Center was invited to paint out at our instructor's home just outside of Winfield, PA.  Robert Hughes was the perfect host, as usual.
Most of the class members had never painted outside before.

There is Robert, walking behind Scott's charcoal.
Robert was too busy to paint this time.

Judy's flowers, Ruta's road, and Peggy's wall:    all first-time plein air paintings!

Fanny's Rugs at the Farmers' Market

"Fanny's Rugs at the Farmer's Market"
5"x7" watercolor in plein air

Plein Air Westfield: Final Day
The last morning we went to the Farmer's Market at the square in the center of Westfield.  There was some really fresh produce, home made baked goods, noodles, jams and pickles and assorted jewelry and woolen goods.  I got a tiny ceramic vase from one of the sellers.
Later we put our work from the previous days in frames for the "wet" sale at the Station Art Gallery.
The sale was only 2 hours and people were buying like crazy.
Afterwards we had a barbeque at our hosts' farm.   A lovely time was had by all.

"Waiting Patiently"

"Waiting Patiently"
8"x10" watercolor en plein air

Plein Air Westfield (continued)
We went to a Blueberry Farm on route 20 just north of Westfield.  This horse and buggy were patiently waiting for the owners to finish picking.
I scooted through deep grass under a pine tree to paint this. (I didn't want to startle the horse.) While under the tree, I dumped my water container into my painting bag, wetting absolutely everything in it.  Some how I managed to toss all my stuff out from under the tree onto the mowed area behind me and eventually dry things out.
I was done painting for that day.  So I picked blueberries!

Lakewood Dock Plein Air by Jane Albin

                                                             "Dock Sitting"
8"x10" Watercolor on 140# Canson block cold press
Looking to the left from the end of the dock at the cottage we rented in Lakewood, NY.  It was getting  more and more cloudy as I rushed to finish this before the rain started.  Now that I look at the scan, it could use a few more darks.

7.5"x 8.25" Watercolor sketch AquaBee SuperDeluxe book
Painted this from the end of the dock of a cottage.  It was such a lovely place we rented for two nights last week.  The place is in Lakewood, NY on Chautauqua Lake.  The owners were very nice and have a great little place here.  The lake was beautiful.  Below is the view from the deck the first night.

Johnstown PA workshop

                                                              "Cambria City Churches"
                                                                  10"x8" Oil on board
I attended a Ron Donoughe plein air workshop in April, at Artworks in Johnstown, PA.  This little panel was what I started in the workshop.  It is  finally finished.  The workshop was very informative and I really liked his "parent color" method for getting started with the painting.
This is how I already work in watercolors.  Begin with 3 or four 'starter' color mixes.  These get tweaked to create the multitude of other shades, tints, values for the painting.
Thank you Ron for the epiphany!

He will be teaching another plein air workshop this August in Wellsboro, PA at the Red Barn Arts Center.   Ron is an excellent teacher.
